After playing poker professionally now for over 3 years, I have seen a lot of things happen. I've seen some very good times and some awful times. However, over these 3 years I have learnt a lot about life in general. Below are the 7 biggest things poker has taught me about myself.
#1 - You can do everything right, and still lose. In poker you try to make the correct play every time, however, due to the large amount of luck involved, you can play perfectly and still lose on any given day. Much like in life, you can try your best but you can sometimes come up short due to no fault of your own.
#2 - Poker teaches you how to look at everything in life in terms of expected value. To become a good poker player you need to look at every single decision independent of all the noise around it. Poker teaches you to just think about the decisions and get those right. You will see other people around you get swayed by short term luck/variance or other types of noise. Poker players make life decisions based on EV.
#3 - Poker has taught me that emotions cloud judgement. When you lose a big pot, it takes a lot of skill to be able to control your emotions, the majority of people tilt in some way after losing a series of big pots. Some playersdon't tilt in a big way, but any presence of emotion can effect the way you do something. Just like any crucial spot in life, if your focused on what your doing your gonna doa lot better than if you have emotions clouding your mind.
#4 - Poker has taught me its about the long run. There is so much luck in poker that you can loose for a very long time, even when your playing "perfect" poker. Many things in life require a large commitment to besuccessful. Poker has reaffirmed this to me. If your confident in your strategy, keep plugging away and things will work eventually.
#5 - Poker has taught me the importance of being humble. When people think about luck in poker they always thing about getting unlucky, the flip side can occur also. If you play for long enough, you will get long periods of hands where you feel like your unbeatable, or every single hand you play, you win. When these times happen you need to remain humble and realize that its good luck. If youdon't, when you fall back to earth things are gonna hurt a lot.
#6 - Poker has taught me the importance of never giving up. Things can go bad, you can get 2 outed on the river for 3/4 of your chips in a tournament. As long as you more than 1 chip left in the game, there is some small chance that you can come back and win. Its too easy to just give up, never give up, play until your last chip is gone!
#7 - Poker has taught me that people are inherently greedy. Poker, like many other things in business and life is a game that thrives on greed. You gotta know when the table gets bad, its time to get up. Leaving a tough table with your winnings is much better than losing it all and going home broke.

If you love poker and also enjoy a good movie, you may have seen your own fair share of poker movies over the years, including classics from the 60's and 70's to the more recent movies of the 90's and 2000's, but if you haven't seen the following three movies, you've been missing out.
The top 3 movies that caught our attention and also seem to appear on most people's list of must-see Texas Hold'em poker movies includes titles such as 'High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story', as well as 'Lucky You' featuring Eric Bana, Robert Duval and Drew Barrymore and possibly the best poker movie ever, 'Rounder's' featuring Matt Damon and John Malcovic. This one also stars John Tuturro.
If there are three poker movies that everyone should see at one point in their life, these are the ones. Each one has a completely different plot but all revolve around the world's most loved card game, Texas Hold'em. These movies are often underrated and certainly deserve more recognition.
'High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story' is a tragic biopic based on the life of the famous American poker player, Stu Ungar. This movie was made in 2003 and was produced by F.A Miller and directed by A.W Vidmer. The entire movie takes the perspective of a flashback and follows the highs and lows of one of pokers most prominent figures.
Ungar, who is played by Michael Imperiolo retells his life story which reveals the WSOP titles that he won, his turbulent battle with cocaine addiction and it takes us right up until his untimely death. This is a true modern classic.
'Lucky You' was a film directed by Curtis Hanson in 2007 which stars Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore and the legendary Robert Duvall. This movie is about the bitter relationship between Huck Cheever (Bana) and his father, L.C Cheever, both of whom are pro poker players who inevitably have to face each other in a heads up-game.
Huck needs to raise at least $10,000 so that he can by a seat to the WSOP main event and he will do almost anything to get this cash. His love interest is his on-off singer girlfriend Billie (Barrymore) and the film actually contains plenty of poker action. The story has a happy ending, but it's a rollercoaster of a ride from start to end.
The absolute must-see number 1 Texas Hold'em Poker movie has to be 'Rounder's', starring Matt Damon. Directed by John Dahl, 'Rounders' is the oldest of the three mentioned here, filmed in 1997. This movie is basically about having to play poker to pay off a debt and includes characters such as Russian gangster 'KGB', Mike's best friend, Worm and Mike's Mentor Knish.
There is a tense poker show-down between Mike and KGB, but does he lose again or is he able to clear his debt? The ending to this film is great and the general plot has been well written. 'Rounder's' should be at the top of your list of movies to go and see, especially for the poker enthusiasts out there.

The past few years have seen a boom on poker players, especially those who play Texas Holdem.
This game is fast gaining preference among poker players for a number of reasons; for one thing, a skillful player has a better advantage. Luck is not what dictates winning here.
Another reason is that Poker is very dynamic. Your strategy varies from game to game because it will depend on the card you have and the table you are in.
Texas Holdem Poker Guide - Playing the Game
The player's objective in this game is to combine cards together (hole and community) to form an invincible poker hand. A strong poker hand may consist of one or both hole cards with some of the community cards or may also be just the community cards.
Of course, the chances of other players spotting the same card combination may happen in which case the pot is split.
Unlike any other card game, poker is considered less expensive since you are playing against others and not against the house. Casinos will charge a small percentage though for hosting the game. (this is called the 'rake'.)
Texas Holdem Poker Guide - Basic Hands
Poker hands come in 10 different varieties. The list below enumerates each one, giving each hand a basic description of the cards it is comprised of. These hands are arranged from strongest to least winnable with the card below succumbing to the one above it.
Royal Flush - the unbeatable combination. This hand is rarely seen and being able to combine one means an unusual stroke of good luck. It is a combination of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten in the same suit.
Straight flush - are five cards of the same suit, arranged in a sequence. A Royal Flush is actually a kind of straight flush.
Four Of A Kind - are four cards of the same rank plus a kicker or side card
Full House - are cards in two sets. The first is a set of three of the same rank and the next is a pair which is also of the same rank
Flush - are five cards in the same suit that come in no particular sequence
Straight - are five cards in a sequence that may be composed of different suits
Three of A Kind - three cards of the same rank plus two kickers
Two Pair - as the name tell us: two pairs of the same rank and one kicker
One Pair - one pair of the same rank and three kickers
High Card - cards that do not below to any of the categories above.
Texas Holdem Poker Guide - Game Sequence
Posting the Blinds - this pertains to bets being placed by the two players to the leftmost of the dealer. The player seated to the dealer's side places the big blind; the one next to him takes care of the small blind which is half of the amount of the big blind
Hole Cards - these are cards that are dealt to ever player. They come in twos and must be dealt face down always. Should this not happen, a player can call a misdeal which will result in getting the cards recalled and reshuffled and eventually dealt to players again.
Pre Flop Betting - this is the first round of betting. Players have the option to raise (increase betting amount), call (match an opponent's raise) or fold (quit the game).
Burn Cards - these are cards that are taken out of the game after every betting round and before community cards are drawn. This is done to prevent cheating.
The Flop - the first three community cards. These must be dealt face up and placed in the center of the board in plain sight.
Second Betting - this comes after the flop but before the burn card and the fourth community card.
The Turn - burn cards are always discarded after every betting round. After this is done, the fourth community card is drawn.
Third Betting - this is the third betting round prior to the last community card being dealt
The River - after a final burn card, this last community card is drawn
The Showdown - this is where all players who have not folded show their hands and determine the winner of the game and of course, the pot.
Now that the basics are explained, one more thing needs to be discussed: the button. The button is used to identify who the dealer is. This is important to the game because it decide the sequence of the play as well as who posts the big and small blinds.
This Texas Holdem Poker Guide has detailed all the important points of Poker and the rules, how to play, hand rankings, etc. It should be all you need to go and play Holdem.

If you play Texas Hold 'Em Poker long enough, you'll wind up suffering some losses, to someone who's just plain lucky, that just drain the life right out of you. Trust me, this is among the most crucifying elements of playing poker. I can't tell you how many times I got into a hand with the nuts only to be beaten by a lucky draw on the river.
This "bad luck" plagued me for years, until I discovered the 4 secrets to avoid it and poker gods to side with me.
Get ready to learn some of the most powerful and closely-guarded secrets in the game of Texas Hold'Em poker.
Secret #1: Employ power positioning to force out draws.
Let's say that you're dealt Bullets (Pocket Rockets, Pocket Aces), and the flop is A, 4, 8... all hearts. In this position, you should NOT attempt to "trap" your opponents. Even with your three Aces, you're still in a precarious position with the flush draw. Bet big and try to take down the hand without another card being turned.
Secret #2: Learn your opponents.
A tight poker player will seldom beat you with a lucky card. Cautious players commonly don't gamble with draws and will only play when they already have a hand.
Maniacs (very aggressive players) can be grievous. Even if they only have a marginal hand, they're more likely to play the full hand and snatch a lucky card. When playing these players, look out for straight and flush draws. These players are particularly dangerous when they have a lot of chips. Avoid challenging these players with borderline hands.
Secret #3: Luck Vs. Math
I recall one time, after a flop, I had an open-ended straight draw and a flush draw. My opponent had a set of Kings. As chip leader, I called his all-in bet. The hand was almost even, but when I caught my flush on the river, he erupted in anger.
Recall that there's a difference between luck and knowledge of the game. Even if you've got a solid hand, if there is a lot of draws that can crush you, you're in jeopardy of catching "bad luck."
So, to make luck work for you, learn the odds and the number of outs for a given hand. For instance, if you flop an open-ended strait draw and flush draw. There are 15 cards in the deck that can complete your hand.
Learn the math and use it during your games so that you'll be able to be the one who catches the "lucky breaks."
Secret #4: Intimidate Your Opponents
Any time that you sit at a poker game, you should make the effort to intimidate the other players. Sunglasses and poker slang can rattle other players, but bold, aggressive, and varied play is much more daunting.
The cardinal rule to intimidating players is to keep them guessing regarding your play. Never fall into a set pattern of checks, calls, bets, and raises.
When you intimidate your opponents, you will be able to force them to act in a way that will assist you. For example, let's say you've got Cowboys (Pocket Kings). You toss in a medium bet to fatten the pot and frighten a few players out.
Now, the flop comes, 4, 5, 10 with two clubs. Your kings are still probably the best hand. However, there is a lot of draws out there.
If you've attained mental power over the players, you will be able to bet big and take the pot. If no players are intimidated by you, they will call you. The next two cards are 6 of clubs and J of clubs and a flush draw takes the pot.

Winning poker comes down to being able to squeeze a profit out of marginal situations. The object is not to win every hand played, but to win every hand you play. The best way to do this is to out bet your opponents. Every bet made should have a purpose. Either it is made to induce a weaker hand to fold, or it is made to maximize the winnings on the hand.
Since there are many opportunities to outplay your opponents, you have to know which opponents you can outplay. It is difficult to finesse weak players. The slow play often backfires because one of the loose limpers will hit a hand. The bluff does not work, since these players call with any two cards. The following sections demonstrate many of the advanced aspects of the game and how best to play them.
Selective Aggression
Showing selective aggression by taking the lead in betting can win many pots. This is true from early position or after other players check to you in middle or late position. A strong raise under the gun from a tight player usually represents a strong hand, as does a re-raise from late position. One can use these bets to increase the pot size with a strong hand or to take down the pot with a semi-bluff when holding a big drawing hand.
Fallacy of Pot Commitment
Many poker advocates espouse that at a certain point in a betting round the amount of chips you have already put in the pot requires that all of your remaining chips should follow. Sometimes, even if the pot or implied odds warrant an All In bet, it is not the right move. If you put your opponent on a hand that you feel you cannot beat, fold- no matter how many chips you have invested-so you may live on to fight another day (or at least another hand).
Learning to Let Go
Never become so married to a hand that you cannot lay it down. You have to pay attention to the community cards as they fall. You have to watch the betting patterns of the players and see how they correspond to previous hands. Most players use a slow play at one time or another. Due to this, a premium starting hand can fall to a better one. They also fall to limpers or big blinds that hit miracle flops or mediocre hands that improve tremendously on the flop.
The majority of the money you lose does not come from folding pre-flop hands that hit big. Instead, it comes from keeping the second-best hand and paying off the best hand at the river. Getting married to a hand that was initially strong is a critical error when playing Hold'em. There is an old adage in 7-Card Stud that says you should fold as soon as your hand is not the best on the table. In Hold'em, unlike 7-Stud, you cannot see what cards the other players have, so it is not possible to fold as soon as you are beat. You can try to avoid having the second-best hand by folding hands that may lose pre-flop. If someone in early position puts in a strong raise, fold that Qs-Jh or low pair. You can reasonably assume the raiser is holding Ace-King, Ace-Queen, King-Ten or now has a high pair.
You should throw your hand away the minute you know you cannot win. To continue to call or raise because your hand was very strong early is highly unprofitable. Constantly watch the board and modify your decision to hold or fold as each new card appears and as each player reacts to the board with their actions or inactions. If you cannot learn to let go-even those pocket Aces-you can lose a large number of chips over the course of a gaming session or during a tournament.
When you are not sure where you stand with your hand, it is alright to fold. Even if your opponent is known as a blind stealer or often bluffs, keeping a weak hand is never the right move. Continuing on when you are not sure you have the best hand is often costly, in both chips and emotions. Of course, if you are planning to bluff, keep the hand and attack if you sense weakness.
Putting on the Brakes
One thing that is important to winning poker is recognizing when to put on the brakes. No-limit poker is all about aggression, but not knowing when to exercise caution is costly. The betting strategies above are when, at each street, you feel you have the dominant hand. Trying to gauge the strength of another player's hand with a check or a call is the correct play when you are no longer confident of having top hand. The check is also an inexpensive move when changing gears or altering your table image.
Do Not Get Greedy
If you have strong hand, keep watching the board for flush and straight draws and, if noted, put on the brakes. A pocket pair of Eights or Kc-Qc loses value with Ks-8s-Qh-10c-6s on the board. Flopping a set or two pair is hard to lay down, so just limiting your desire to raise and re-raise or go All In can save many chips if your opponent hits.
Being a Table Bully
There is a difference between getting greedy and over-betting your hand and purposely controlling the action when you have a larger stack. This is most common in tournament play, where players develop large-stacks of chips, but is also prevalent in no-limit ring games. Any time your stack is larger than the other players at the table, you can become a table bully. The purpose is to use your chip stack to force other players out of a hand with the threat of their losing it all. This is an effective way to steal blinds and force medium to good hands to fold without challenging your hand.
